Unrestricted Annual Support

“The Annual Fund provides essential support for scholarships, seed funding for important new initiatives that sustain intellectual vitality, and the resources to respond to new opportunities and challenges. Each year, annual giving provides the unrestricted funds that are so critical to maintaining the margin of excellence at Washington University, and for that, we are most grateful.”
— Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton

Every gift matters—and every donor counts

Through support for the Annual Fund, every graduate and friend of the University can participate in the success of the campaign. Each gift provides crucial support for scholarships, faculty teaching and research, student research, student life, technology and the libraries, and a premier learning environment.

Many people do not realize that tuition covers only a portion of the cost to educate our students.  Income from endowment provides about 10 percent of the university’s annual overall budget, but endowed resources are invested to ensure permanent income, and most are restricted by their donors for specific uses. The Annual Fund is essential to help bridge the gap.

Every dollar contributed to the Annual Fund equals the spending power of approximately $25 in endowment funds. And because annual gifts are unrestricted, they can be put to immediate use where they are needed most.

The William Greenleaf Eliot Society recognizes leaders who make annual, unrestricted gifts of $1,000 or more.  Eliot Society members provide more than 75 percent of the Annual Fund each year. We encourage donors of restricted gifts, such as endowed professorships or scholarships, to also support the Annual Fund as members of the Eliot Society.

Today the Annual Fund totals more than $20 million per year. Our goal is to increase the Annual Fund to $25 million per year, and we challenge ourselves to do even more.

Together, we can turn aspirations into achievements. Together, we make a difference.
